DAWSON Arthur William

Arthur was born on 29 December 1893 in York, Western Australia, one of the few Australian born soldiers to enlist from Gnowangerup.
His parents were William Dawson and Ellen nee Bassett. Ellen was born 27 April 1865, died 8 October 1944 at Leederville.
Arthur had seven siblings – Sybil, Dorothy, Bertha, Marjory, Janet, Cuthbert and Hubert. He attended school in the Goldfields of Western Australia. Arthur worked as a fencer, later farming at Toolbrunup.
Arthur was a 23 years old, a 'farmer' and gave his address as Greenbushes, WA when he enlisted on 22 June 1916 in Albany.
At the time he was living/working at Tambellup. Arthur noted his next of kin as his wife, Maude Theresa nee Searle, of Toolbrunup via Tambellup. They were married at the Searle residence in Tambellup on 4 November 1916, a few weeks before he was due to depart.

Arthur trained at Blackboy Hill and then embarked from Fremantle on board the HMAT A35 Berrima on 23 December 1916.
He was hospitalised once during his service.
He returned to Australia on 21 June 1919.
Arthur and Maud had five children – Ellen ‘Nell’ Margaret (b.1920-1997), Veronica Mary (1923-1998), Sheila Eva (1925-), William John (1927-1984) and Arthur Leo ‘Leo’ (1929-1968).
William John served in WWII.

Robert and Pearl Marshall worked for Arthur at his Toolbrunup property for 12 months 1937/38.
He later farmed in Gnowangerup next door to Leo Dawson, on a property now owned by the O’Keefe family (2004?)
Arthur enlisted in the VDC in Gnowangerup during WWII, later taking the rank of Corporal and working at Echelon & Records for the 5th Military District.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, played cricket and was a member of the Gnowangerup Band.

Arthur died on 7 November 1967 at the Osborne Park Hospital and is buried at Karrakatta. Maud is buried with Arthur.
